The Louisiana Poverty Initiative will be dedicated to the study and mitigation of poverty at large, with its initial focus on Louisiana and the Mid-South Delta Region. The effort will bridge research, practice, and policy by developing evidence-based models for poverty mitigation with both local and national applications. Louisiana is considered a unique geographic and political position for interdisciplinary research in this area. Lingering effects of two major hurricanes have made its endemic poverty more apparent and heightened the need for long-term economic solutions.

The Arts, Visualization, Advanced Technologies and Research (or AVATAR) Initiative will establish a research and creative focus on the intersections between the arts, technology, and computational sciences. Southeast Louisiana, and especially the Greater Baton Rouge area, has emerged in recent years as a welcome home for new digital entertainment, film and interactive media industries. AVATAR will support economic development in this sector by engaging key areas of research, including Intelligent and Responsive Systems such as video games, training systems and simulation visualizations, and the collaborative digital media arts.
